White House Reveals Government Employee Job Cuts as Shutdown Approaches Third Week
Administration officials disclosed the start of federal worker terminations on Friday, following through on prior threats in response to the ongoing US government shutdown, which is now poised to stretch into its third consecutive week.

The director of the White House budget office posted on social media that “reductions in force have begun,” indicating the official procedure for letting employees go.
While the official provided no details on which agencies were impacted, a treasury spokesperson confirmed that layoff warnings had been distributed within that department. Additionally, a Department of Homeland Security representative noted that staff reductions would take place at the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency. Moreover, a union representing federal workers announced that employees at the Department of Education would be affected by the staff cuts.
Labor Reaction and Court Actions
Labor representatives cautions that the layoffs would have “devastating effects” on services relied upon by the public and vowed to challenge the moves in court.
This is shameful that the administration has used the government shutdown as an excuse to wrongfully terminate thousands of workers who provide critical services to communities nationwide,” stated a national union president, representing the American Federation of Government Employees.
The largest labor federation in the US responded to the announcement, saying, “Labor organizations will see you in court.”
Political Standoff and Budget Dispute
Congressional Democrats have refused to vote for a Republican-backed legislation to restore funding unless it includes healthcare-centered concessions. After multiple unsuccessful votes, the Senate’s Republican leaders have put the chamber in recess until the following week, indicating the standoff is unlikely to be resolved before then.
During a media briefing, the GOP leader in the House, the speaker, criticized Senate Democrats for rejecting the Republican proposal, which was approved in the House on a near party-line vote.

A public service advocate, the president of the advocacy group, condemned the political stalemate’s effect on federal employees.
This is unjust to make federal employees suffer because our leaders in the legislature and the White House have not succeeded to keep our federal operations open and operational,” the advocate stated. “Our air traffic controllers, veterans’ healthcare providers, smoke jumpers and food inspectors are not at fault for this government shutdown.”
The irony is that lawmakers and senior White House leaders are continuing to be paid amid the funding gap.
