What We Know About the Those Lost of the Bondi Shooting
At least 16 lives perished and in excess of 40 sustained injuries when gunmen fired on a Hanukkah gathering at Bondi Beach, an incident Australian police are describing as a act of terrorism.
As of the newest reports, officials have confirmed the number of fatalities remains at 16, encompassing one of the alleged gunmen. Furthermore, 42 injured people were admitted to the hospital.
The deceased are still awaiting publicly named, but investigators think their ages range between 10 and 87 years old.
Listed are the individuals who have been identified to date.
Eli Schlanger
London-born clergyman Eli Schlanger, 41, was the first victim to be named.
Reportedly a father-of-five, he was the assistant rabbi at Chabad of Bondi. Relatives and friends spoke of him as “lively, dynamic, and vibrant and a very kind and sociable person who loved to help people”.
“How can a joyful rabbi who went to a beach to share joy and positivity, to make the world a better place, have his life ended in this way?” a family member said.
Schlanger and his wife celebrated the arrival of their newest son in October.
Alexander Kleytman
Alexander Kleytman was also among those killed, according to his wife.
She told the events leading up to the attack, stating they were standing when the shooting erupted. “He moved to protect me because he wanted to stay near me,” she stated.
The pair were both survivors of the Holocaust, having endured unspeakable terror in their childhood. They had later relocated to Australia from Ukraine.
Dan Elkayam
French authorities have confirmed that French national Dan Elkayam is a casualty.
Publicly, the Foreign Minister said that France mourned with his family and loved ones, the Jewish community, and the Australian people.
“This cowardly attack is a new, tragic manifestation of a revolting outpouring of antisemitic hatred that we must put a stop to,” the message continued.
One Child
A young girl, aged 10 who was taken to the a children's hospital is among those who had died, police have confirmed.
One Israeli Citizen
An Israeli citizen was also killed in the incident, as per multiple sources citing the Israeli foreign ministry.
Those Injured
From the 42 people transported to hospitals, many are still under care, with a number in serious condition. The injured include two officers who responded to the attack.
One of the injured is a bystander who attempted to intervene to tackle one of the attackers. Called a hero, he sustained gunshot wounds but is recovering well in hospital.
Arsen Ostrovsky
One of those wounded is Arsen Ostrovsky, a human rights lawyer. Sources state he was injured and underwent treatment in hospital.
In a message, he described the scene as an “absolute bloodbath,” but also noted the actions of those who rushed to help. He said he believed it was a “stroke of luck” he was alive.
Evan Zlatkis
Evan Zlatkis, a media director, was also injured in the shooting. He said he heard “a large number” of shots.
“I thought it was rubber bullets, but it penetrated my own skin and into my leg,” he said. “I sustained a gunshot wound. They bandaged me up. I’m ok.”
