The people of Israel mark second anniversary of 7 October incident as Gaza ceasefire talks continue
Citizens have gathered throughout the country to remember 24 months since the Hamas-conducted offensive on 7 October 2023, as discussions proceeded in the neighboring country over an end to the war in Gaza.
The assault saw over 1,200 people killed and 251 others abducted away to Gaza as hostages. It was the single deadliest day for Jewish people since the Holocaust.
Israel answered by launching a defensive operation in Gaza which has taken over 67,000 people, according to the territory's Hamas-administered health ministry. Its statistics are considered reliable by the UN and other world agencies.
"Our bloodthirsty opponents have caused great damage, but they have not overcome us," the leader stated on that day.
He also vowed to "achieve all the goals of the war: the return of all the kidnapped, the destruction of the Hamas administration and the promise that Gaza will no longer create a danger to Israel".
Remembrance Events Across Israel
The government authorities rescheduled formal remembrance events until October 16th - after the completion of the Jewish High Holiday season - but ceremonies still were held around the country on Tuesday.
A remembrance service for the families of people who lost their lives in the Hamas attack was organized in Tel Aviv. Organized by the affected families, it was aired throughout Israeli television channels.
Hours earlier, a moment of silence was observed across the country.
Peace Discussions in Egypt
Meanwhile, both sides' negotiating teams met in the North African coastal city of the Egyptian city for a continuing round of indirect talks to examine the conditions of the proposal.
A prominent representative knowledgeable about the discussions revealed that an evening round of negotiations started at 7 PM local time.
The representative said the earlier meeting ended without significant progress, because of disagreements over the proposed Israeli pullout plans from Gaza and over safeguards Hamas demands to make certain Israel does not resume hostilities after the first phase of the agreement.
He noted that the talks are "challenging and have yet to produce any real breakthrough," but mentioned that intermediaries are making efforts to close the disparities between the both parties.
Essential Matters in Negotiations
- A permanent halt to fighting
- The exchange of the captives still held by Hamas for inmates from Gaza
- The removal of Israeli forces from Gaza
- Plans for relief supplies distribution
- After-conflict administration of the territory
Citizen Reaction
In the city's Hostages Square that day, young Hagar - whose brother lived through the assault on the Nova music festival, where many attendees were killed and many more were abducted by Hamas fighters - shared: "No place feels like home anymore and until all the hostages are released not a single person will be secure."
"After we see all home again, we can breathe again. Then we can commence rebuild," she continued.
In front of the leader's home in the capital, people assembled to demonstrate their solidarity for the loved ones of the abducted. Israel reports nearly fifty continue in captivity in Gaza, twenty of whom are thought to be alive.
Demonstrator a participant remarked: "It's necessary do every compromise required for the captives to come back home. But we really want assurances that we will be protected."
Opinion polls now frequently demonstrate that approximately 70% of Israeli citizens desire the conflict to finish in exchange for the liberation of the hostages.
Gaza Situation
At the area of the music event, those paying respects gathered to pay their respects.
From there, the sound of aerial bombardments and shelling could be noticed just a short distance away in Gaza, where observers reported the intense Israeli bombardment carried on.
In the main city, bombardments were noted in the dawn of Tuesday in the west side Tal al-Hawa, Rimal and Nasr neighbourhoods and in the east side neighbourhood of the community, as well Shati refugee camp to the northwest.
"As the night comes, the dread comes with it," displaced urban resident a mother, whose 17-year-old son was killed by an Israeli air strike last year, shared.
"My family are fearful of the attacks. During nighttime we are lying together, clinging, notably my smallest child who puts his head on me throughout the night."
"Every second we monitor the news to see the situation. And I'm concerned that this halt will not be finalized and that the fighting will return to us."
Medical Situation
Al-Shifa hospital in Gaza City reported it had accepted the corpses of several people by the afternoon, including several killed in an Israeli bombing in the southern district.
Nasser hospital in the southern urban center of Khan Younis said additional victims had been transported. One of them was killed by Israeli forces while seeking aid to the south region, medics reported.
