The network's Leading Fresh Series of This Year Secures a Substantial Renewal for Seasons 2 and 3.
During the fall season, Adult Swim debuted a new season of its quirky hit, Smiling Friends. Yet, not long after, the channel introduced a completely new animated series with a strikingly different feel. Haha, You Clowns proved to be heartwarming and calm, evoking a animated take of a contemplative talk show. In an era often marked by dark humor, this show's sincerity found an audience and helped it become a breakout hit.
A Two-Season Greenlight
On December 18th, Adult Swim confirmed a big renewal: Haha, You Clowns has been renewed for two additional seasons. This gives showrunner Joe Cappa significant creative freedom to expand upon the world of the Campbell family. The series follows three well-mannered teenage brothers whose central trait is their profound affection for their single father, with Cappa voicing for all four central characters.
"I am incredibly thankful to the viewers of the show who took a chance on the show and shared it with others," stated Cappa. "I am overjoyed that I get to hang out at the Campbell household for seasons to come."
Network Praise
In the same announcement commendation from Adult Swim president Michael Ouweleen, who called the series as "radically heartfelt and oddly captivating." He thanked the fans who discovered the show and championed its peculiarly charming appeal.
"All of you got behind this new show, praised it on social media, and helped it grow week over week so we could approve not one, but two more seasons," commented Ouweleen. "As the show says: 'You are strong! You are loved!'"
A Comforting Counterpoint
When it first aired, Haha, You Clowns was described as "a gentle counterpart" to more cynical adult animated fare. It offers something unexpectedly cozy about watching this charming family go about their everyday routines.
Previously, creator Joe Cappa expressed his hope to evolve comedy past its long-running cynical streak. He attributed this trend to a broader media landscape.
“There's this level of irony that we are trapped in,” explained Cappa. “It feels as if we have to know we’re the smartest person in the room when we're watching stuff. I feel like we've been doing this for a decade, and we must laugh at something different now. The genre needs to change.”
What Comes Next
Given this two-season order, with Haha, You Clowns guaranteed to return, Cappa may well catalyze that change he described. At a minimum, the renewal promises audiences more opportunities to experience the gentle humor of the endearing Campbell clan.
The season 1 finale of Haha, You Clowns is scheduled to air on December 21st. The complete first season is available for streaming on HBO Max.
