Showrunner Vivienne Medrano's boldly transgressive adult musical-comedy series, which sprang from a crowdfunded pilot, fully found its footing in its second season. Building on the climactic revelations of season 1, the narrative expands significantly, centering on the ambitious media overlord Vox as he seizes command of the situation, sparking a series of ever-more explosive conflicts that naturally end in show-stopping musical numbers.

Although it may lack a one breakout song quite like the first season's "Loser, Baby," this is due to each element in this season being increasingly ambitious. The action, character arcs, and especially the score and songs are collectively more sophisticated. The story moves the overarching plot dramatically while providing plenty of bizarre, wild, and ultimately fun dark fantasy.

8. Daredevil: Born Again

Following the acclaimed Netflix show, Daredevil: Born Again had enormous shoes to fill. Despite significant development challenges, the final product demonstrates to be worthy of the effort. The plot centers on Matt Murdock once his dual life as Daredevil is publicly revealed, making him a target to enemies both history and present in a refreshed version of his familiar setting.

The premiere is a thrilling return to form, capturing the gritty feeling fans cherished from the original incarnation. Although the middle episodes venture into some new narrative ground, the first season finishes on a strong note, setting viewers eagerly awaiting a follow-up season.

7. Common Side Effects

A surprising this year's gem, this show is essentially an animated crime saga filtered through a sensibility of a suburban satire. Helmed by an Adult Swim veteran alongside comedy Steve Hely, it follows the saga of a nerdy mycologist who finds a curative mushroom and quickly finds himself hunted by everyone from ruthless Big Pharma executives to federal authorities.

Despite being a parody, the narrative plays out with the serious intensity of a 1970s conspiracy film. Enhanced by trippy animation and an unnerving musical soundtrack, the story delves into bigger questions about the mushroom's full effects. It's a smart, visually striking, and utterly gripping first season.

6. Fallout Season 2

This acclaimed series of the iconic video game franchise returned with a new batch of stories that expanded its sprawling lore and expanded its nuclear wasteland setting. Although it travels in the direction of the legendary location of New Vegas, the story is far from a straight retelling of that game; instead, it continues to examine themes of authority and freedom.

The show skillfully balances multiple storylines and points of view, from the protagonist's quest for justice to Maximus's struggle with the dogma of the Brotherhood of Steel. The outcome is a deeply layered and wholly engaging chapter to the ever-growing wasteland saga.

5. Invincible Season 3

The bloody and emotionally charged adult animation show keeps its powerful streak in season 3.
