New York Jets Head Coach Glenn Optimistic Kris Boyd Will Recover Fully After New York City Incident

New York Jets coach Aaron Glenn mentioned that he has been in contact with cornerback Kris Boyd and believes the player will recover well after suffering a gunshot wound in midtown Manhattan in the early hours of Sunday.

Glenn noted that Boyd, currently in the hospital, was “in good spirits” during their latest talk.

“That gives me comfort, is that he’s in good spirits,” Glenn said Wednesday. “His wife and his kid, they are doing well and he is expected to recover fully.”

The coach did not know when Boyd could be discharged the hospital, where he has been listed as critical but stable.

“Still unsure,” the coach said. “Yet I must mention, hearing him speak, he felt really upbeat. Furthermore, that’s what gives me comfort, that he feels like that and he’s talking that way.”

Authorities issued security footage earlier this week of a suspect in the incident involving Boyd. A motive for the shooting remains under investigation and officials stated it is unknown if Boyd was singled out. There were no additional victims according to reports.

The incident occurred around 2 a.m. on Sunday about halfway between the famous arena and Times Square. Boyd, in his late twenties, was taken to a local hospital after being shot in the abdomen, police said. The perpetrator got away.

Glenn said Boyd has been on his mind “a ton” since the news broke. Glenn added that Boyd and his spouse recently welcomed a child.

“My initial concern, he recently became a father,” Glenn remarked. “I thought of his spouse, worrying about his newborn and my priority is his well-being. That was my main concern.
“A certain process is underway, that I won’t detail, but I am pleased that his outcome looks very positive.”

Boyd hasn’t played in the present campaign, his debut year with New York, after being placed on injured reserve on mid-August with a shoulder injury that needed an operation.

Boyd came to New York as a new signing in March and was projected as an important component of a revamped special teams unit under the coach and ST coordinator Chris Banjo. But Boyd was injured during preseason drills on early August and was taken away on a cart.

Boyd has remained around the team all season long while recovering from the shoulder injury.

“He’s been a part of what we’re doing,” Glenn commented. “In fact, he is a regular at our matches. His commitment is total. To be one of the top special teams players in this league, he has excelled at supporting his teammates.”

Boyd, hailing from the Lone Star State, played his first four seasons with the Vikings after being a seventh-round pick by Minnesota out of Texas University in 2019. He later played for Arizona in 2023 and then joined Houston’s practice squad later that season. Boyd agreed to a one-year deal worth $1.6m with the Jets in March.
