Weather experts are saying an icy commencement to the new year, with snow anticipated throughout a lot of the UK. Celebrants have been told to wrap up as bitterly cold temperatures are forecast for New Year's Eve.
Celebratory Events Continue In Spite of Alerts
The Scottish capital's famous Hogmanay festivities are expected to take place, unlike last year's postponement. This comes despite yellow warnings for snow over northern Scotland.

Moving into Friday, snow alerts have been issued for Northern Ireland and from Wales, over the north-west, the West Midlands and reaching London and the majority of the south-east of England.

About 10cm of snow is expected to have settled in some areas by Friday morning, reaching up to 30cm on the most elevated routes and peaks.
Health Alerts Issued
Meanwhile, amber-level health advisories are in force for the north-east and north-west of England. These are expected to continue until noon on 5 January, with readings likely to fall to between 3C and 5C.
Officials stated this indicated the weather could to lead to major effects across medical and care provision. This encompasses a likely increase in the mortality rate among the elderly or unwell or those aged 65 or over.
