Based on data disclosure figures, more than two thousand children who were either exploited or arrived in the UK alone to apply for protection went missing from social services’ care during the past year.

Analysis Uncovers Alarming Data

An analysis titled “Until Harm Stops” filed data inquiries to youth protection agencies across England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland.

Statistics from 135 local authorities showed that out of two thousand three hundred thirty-five young people categorized as having been victimized or suspected of having been trafficked, eight hundred sixty-four (37%) were recorded as vanished.

A total of one hundred forty-one municipal councils responded to inquiries about lone child asylum seekers in their care, who totaled eleven thousand nine hundred ninety-nine minors. Of these, 1,501 (thirteen percent) were reported missing.

Serious Threat for Vulnerable Young People

The study, released by non-profit organizations, warns that these populations are at “extremely elevated danger” of disappearing from care.

Several exploited minors in the UK are local residents while others are from abroad.

They may have faced either sexual exploitation or criminal exploitation, for example by county lines gangs.

Institutional Failures in Safeguarding

Municipal councils have a mandatory responsibility to secure and help victimized and solo young people under minor welfare structures. However, there is no released national authorities data on the issue.

The recent study cautions that factors such as uncertain legal status can heighten young people’s susceptibility to further harm, placing them at serious threat of re-trafficking and continued manipulation.

Calls for Measures

The analysis indicates there is a “continuing and significant failure” in protection and appeals to government bodies and police forces to make certain following of proper procedures.

The researchers also urge the Education Ministry to ensure all trafficked and unaccompanied children can obtain proper lodging that protects them from being exploited again.

Lodging Concerns

Beginning from the autumn of 2021, government bodies have been mandated to guarantee that all looked-after children under 16 are assigned to settings that provide care.

However, teenagers aged 16 and 17 can still be housed in so-called “supervised lodging” that does not offer daily supervision.
