Fury Erupts as Former President Trump's Comments on Director Rob Reiner Ignites Fierce Rebuke
Figures from across the political spectrum and the Hollywood world are uniting to condemn former President Donald Trump for his statements following the shocking passing of esteemed director Rob Reiner and his wife, Michele.
An Inflammatory Social Media Statement
Following the discovery of the couple dead at their Los Angeles home, Trump posted on his platform to describe the deceased director as "tortured and struggling". The message, he claimed Reiner's death was "due to the anger he caused others through his massive, unyielding, and incurable affliction with a debilitating disease known as TRUMP DERANGEMENT SYNDROME".
His comments then pivoted to praising his own achievements, juxtaposing Reiner's alleged "intense obsession" and "clear paranoia" with what Trump called the "unprecedented era of America".
Police Update and Detention
Police have since announced the arrest of the couple's adult son, Nick, on suspicion of murder in relation to the case. It is reported his bail was established at a significant amount.
A Wave of Criticism from Celebrities and Politicians
The reaction to Trump's post was swift and scathing.
“What a vile and despicable comment,” remarked actor Patrick Schwarzenegger.
Media personality Whoopi Goldberg, who called Reiner a friend, similarly condemned the remarks. She pointed to previous rhetoric from Trump regarding the killing of an activist, asking, "Have you no decency? Can you get any lower?"
The state of California's Governor, Gavin Newsom, simply stated, "He is a sick man."
Echoing this view, US House member Maxwell Alejandro Frost declared, "What a despicable piece of trash."
Senator Chris Murphy commented, "He's just crossed a line. Now saying the Reiners caused their own murder because they didn’t support him. Deeply disturbing."
Criticism from His Own Party
Some GOP lawmakers also voiced dismay.
Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene stated that the situation was "a personal tragedy, not about political feuds or political enemies". Greene also mentioned struggles with addiction and psychological well-being some families face.
Another Republican congressman, Thomas Massie, labeled Trump's discourse "inappropriate and disrespectful" given the nature of the deaths. He openly challenged members in his party to justify the comments.
Reiner's Legacy and Stance on Trump
Rob Reiner was long a outspoken detractor of Donald Trump. In a previous conversation, he argued Trump was "not psychologically suited" for the office. He had also warned about the dangers of authoritarian rule should Trump be reelected to power.
"There is autocracy on the rise around the world," Reiner said. "If we crumble, there’s a risk that democracy collapse around the world."
Despite his pointed opposition, Reiner had previously shown "complete revulsion" and condemned violence for political ends without reservation following the killing of another political figure.
An Ironic Connection: The Art of the Deal
Adding a layer of past irony, Michele Reiner, previously Michele Singer, was the photographer who shot the cover image for Donald Trump's 1987 book, The Art of the Deal.
Rob Reiner had previously recounted the story of the photo shoot, mentioning Trump's demand for "a specific hair product" while being photographed on a high-rise overlooking Central Park.
