Antony Price, Famed for Creating Looks for Iconic Acts Like Bowie and Duran Duran, Dies at 80.
Antony Price, the visionary British fashion designer who crafted many legendary styles associated with David Bowie, Roxy Music, and Queen Camilla, has sadly died aged 80.
He was celebrated for his architectural shapes and dramatic aesthetics, such as the soft-colored suits that appeared in the iconic band Duran Duran's seminal music video for "the song Rio".
"They honored him as a 'visionary' and a 'kind, intelligent and razor-witted friend,' Duran Duran shared a message across their platforms."
His passing follows just weeks after he presented his newest line in London, his first in more than 30 years. Singer Lily Allen modelled a dress inspired by the famous black velvet "so-called 'revenge dress'" once worn by Diana, Princess of Wales.
A Pioneering Career
A native of Yorkshire, born in 1945, Price moved to London in the early 1960s to attend the renowned Royal College of Art.
A year after graduating, he commenced his career designing men's fashion at Stirling Copper and was the creator of the form-fitting, button-fly pants that Sir Mick Jagger sported during The Rolling Stones' Gimme Shelter tour in 1969.
He established his eponymous line in 1979 and presented his inaugural collection a year later. The show opened with creations worn by the famed model Jerry Hall, who also wore the marriage dress Price specifically designed for her nuptials with Sir Mick Jagger.
Partnerships with Stars
A frequent collaborator of musical chameleon David Bowie, Price created the iconic jacket the singer wore for his "the song As The World Falls Down" music video in 1986.
His signature ability to fuse menswear and womenswear along with his technical proficiency in crafting form-fitting garments established him as a "one-of-a-kind talent," as stated by the British Fashion Council.
During the nineties, he began working on ensembles for Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall, which included a number of outfits for her American tour after becoming Duchess.
After a career spanning more than five decades, Price presented his final runway show in London last month in partnership with the label 16Arlington.
